Within the production chain of factory workshops, transport equipment functions like “blood vessels,” connecting raw materials, semi-finished products, and production lines. Yet many factories face a dilemma when selecting material handling equipment: should we choose trackless battery operated carts or rail guided carts?

Beyond hard metrics like usage scenarios and load capacity, the time cost of installation and commissioning is increasingly becoming a key factor for factory owners. After all, the sooner the equipment is operational, the sooner the production line runs smoothly, and the more assured order delivery becomes.

Installation and Commissioning of Rail Guided Cart

Describing the installation of rail guided carts as a “major undertaking” is no exaggeration. From ground preparation to final operation, each step is time-consuming and labor-intensive, taking at least 10 days and up to half a month.

Ground Preparation and Leveling Requirements

The first step is ground leveling. Rail-guided transport systems demand extremely high ground flatness. Even slight unevenness in the workshop floor requires prior remediation. This involves either pouring new cement or repeatedly grinding the surface until the ground deviation meets track installation standards. This single task alone takes several full days.

Rail Alignment and Fixing Process

After ground preparation, track measurement and marking follow. Workers use specialized tools to precisely measure track spacing and determine alignment, ensuring absolute parallelism between the two tracks—otherwise, electric battery operated carts may veer off course during operation, potentially causing safety issues. This measurement and marking process takes at least half a day to a full day.

Then comes track laying and securing. Tracks must be firmly anchored to pre-set bases—some secured with expansion bolts, others embedded in concrete. This step demands significant labor and requires waiting for the concrete to fully cure. Humid weather further prolongs drying times, slowing progress.

Time and Labor Costs Involved

Even after track installation, each section must undergo leveling adjustments. Workers meticulously inspect with spirit levels, grinding high spots, and shimming low areas. Single-track leveling alone can take 1-2 days.

Finally, rail-guided transport systems themselves require commissioning. This involves checking wheel-to-track alignment and motor functionality. Any mismatch between wheels and tracks necessitates disassembly and readjustment. Following this entire process, the time from initial installation to normal operation of a rail transfer car is conservatively estimated at 10-15 days. If the workshop contains obstacles requiring avoidance or the floor modification is complex, the timeframe will be even longer.

Installation and Commissioning of Trackless Battery Operated Cart

Compared to the “cumbersome” nature of rail transport systems, the installation and commissioning of trackless battery operated carts can be described as “highly efficient and convenient.” The absence of track-laying requirements directly saves a significant amount of time.

Its floor requirements are minimal: any standard industrial floor surface without major pits or protrusions suffices, eliminating the need for additional ground modifications.

Upon delivery to the workshop, the first step is basic assembly—installing the battery or connecting the power supply, which takes only 1-2 hours.

Functional testing follows: calibrating steering and braking systems, verifying motor and control responsiveness. Trackless battery operated cart then undergoes test runs to validate smooth cornering and low-grade incline navigation within the workshop. Route adjustments are made directly through the control system without altering the floor.

Thus, a small trackless battery operated cart (handling several tons) can be operational within 1-2 days from unloading to final debugging. Even for large models handling dozens of tons, the entire process takes no more than 3-5 days.

Time Savings and Cost Efficiency: Rail vs. Trackless Transfer Carts

First, production handoffs become more timely. If a workshop is rushing to meet an order, putting battery operated cart on wheels into service one day earlier allows for earlier transportation of raw materials and semi-finished products, eliminating the need for manual carting. This not only reduces labor costs but also prevents production delays caused by untimely transportation, ensuring more reliable order delivery.

Second, it avoids disrupting existing operations. Installing rail transfer carts requires groundwork that generates dust and noise, potentially interfering with other production lines. Battery operated cart on wheels require no ground modifications; they can be commissioned immediately upon arrival, seamlessly integrating into the workshop’s workflow without disruption.

For factories focused on “cost reduction and efficiency gains,” saving a couple of weeks means putting equipment to work sooner, directly translating to cost savings and increased profits.

When to Choose Rail-Guided vs. Trackless Transfer Carts

Of course, we’re not saying rail transfer carts are inferior. In scenarios involving exceptionally heavy loads (such as hundreds of tons) and completely fixed travel routes,  rail-guided transport systems still hold irreplaceable advantages.

However, for most factories, transportation needs lean more toward “flexibility”—such as adjusting transport routes based on production lines or wanting material handling equipment to be operational as quickly as possible. In such cases, the time savings offered by trackless electric transfer carts during installation and commissioning become a significant advantage.

Choosing material handling equipment fundamentally means selecting the most efficient solution tailored to our factory’s needs. If our facility prioritizes flexible transportation and aims to get equipment operational quickly, the time savings provided by trackless battery operated carts may be the most critical factor in our decision.
